Wild February half-term activities for families across Staffordshire

Beat the winter blues this February with a series of wildlife-themed adventures across Staffordshire. From campfire cooking at The Wolseley Centre to sensory exploration at Gentleshaw Common, there is something for every young explorer.

Embark on a wild family adventure this February and encourage your children to discover the delights of the natural world. With wildlife-themed outdoor activities and crafting, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is offering a variety of ways to let nature inspire you during the half-term break.

The Wolseley Centre, near Rugeley

The fun begins on Monday 16 February with two specialized sessions:

  • Wildlings (10.30am – 12pm): Designed for ages six months to five years. Activities include making mud pies, bug hunting, and toasting treats on the campfire.
  • Wildfamilies (1.30pm – 3.30pm): Suitable for all ages. Features den building, hammock swinging, and campfire cooking.

On Tuesday 17 February, a woodland adventure featuring Forest School skills will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm, teaching attendees how to build shelters and cook on open fires.

Wednesday 18 February offers a choice of two creative themes:

  • Arts and Crafts (10.30am – 12.30pm): Learn hapa-zome (Japanese fabric printmaking) and create natural paintbrushes.
  • Spring Family Fun (1.30pm – 3.30pm): Celebrate early spring and Valentine’s Day by making themed crafts and bird feeders.

Gentleshaw Common, near Cannock Wood

On Monday 16 February, a free Roaming Wildplay session will take place between 1pm and 3pm. Embracing the Forest School ethos, this child-led exploration encourages sensory play and wildlife discovery. Meet at Ye Olde Windmill Inn (WS15 4NF).

Biddulph Grange Country Park

Join a drop-in Wildfamilies session on Wednesday 18 February between 11am and 1pm. Families can enjoy scavenger hunts, nature trails, and ID guides. The activity area is located in the woods, approximately half a mile from the main car park.

Hem Heath Woods, Stoke-on-Trent

On Thursday 19 February (1.30pm – 3pm), a Wildlings session will be held for children aged six months to five years (older siblings welcome). The cost is £4 per child and booking is required.


Important Information

  • Dress Code: All sessions run "whatever the weather," so waterproofs and wellies are highly recommended for both adults and children.
  • SEND Support: Wolseley Centre sessions are integrated Aiming High sessions. Children with SEND can secure free places by booking directly through the Aiming High program via the Staffordshire Connects website.
  • Bookings: Most sessions require advance booking. Secure your place atwww.staffs-wildlife.org.uk/events.
