Councillor Jane Ashworth, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, has issued a statement following the announcement of redundancies at the iconic Wedgwood factory in Barlaston.

The leader expressed significant concern for the staff and the wider community while outlining the council's immediate response to the news.

Support for Affected Staff

The council’s primary focus is assisting those facing redundancy in finding new employment opportunities. The JET service will be coordinating with Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers Service to provide tailored support for all impacted workers.

“Wedgwood is an important heritage brand and a key visitor destination for our city. The fact is global and national pressures, including high energy and manufacturing costs, changing demand, and evolving supply chains, have made things very difficult for manufacturers."

A Call for National Support

Councillor Ashworth highlighted that the ceramics industry extends far beyond traditional tableware, noting its critical applications in the defence and aerospace sectors. While maintaining that the industry has a "bright future," she stressed that immediate government support is required to navigate current economic pressures.

The council confirmed that discussions were held with the government this week to press the case that ceramics must be recognised as a vital industry for the country’s future resilience and growth.
