Registration is now open for the iconic road race, the Mow Cop Killer Mile, with organisers predicting record numbers of runners in 2026.

The legendary event returns on Thursday 7 May 2026 and features a brutal ascent of 570 feet, with sections reaching a 25% gradient. This year marks the 38th edition of the race, which is on track to be the largest in its history.

The Killer Mile features multiple race categories, including junior races, club runners and fun runners – so participants of all abilities can take on the hill at their own pace. Since registrations opened in December 2025, several races have already sold over 60% of their allocated places.

Supporting the Community

Every participant will receive a commemorative medal, and prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. In 2025, the event raised over £5,000 for local charity and community causes. Funds from the 2026 Killer Mile will be donated to:

  • Mow Cop Community Hall
  • Mount Pleasant Village Hall
  • The National Trust (specifically to support repairs and maintenance to Mow Cop Castle)

This year also marks the second year of a multi-year sponsorship with Stoke-on-Trent based information management company, Chaffinch.

“Following on from the success of the 2025 race, we are delighted with the response from the local community for the 2026 event. During our first year of involvement in 2025, entries almost doubled to around 1,100 runners, with record donations made to local causes. We hope to generate meaningful donations to support those in the Mow Cop area.”

A Race for Everyone

Geoff Pettengell, of organising partner Mow Cop Runners, added: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the entry numbers we’ve seen so far. It is always a joy to see people of all ages challenging themselves and taking part in this fabulous occasion. Whether you run professionally, compete with your club, or have never run before, the Killer Mile is an event you won’t want to miss.”

To book a place, visit www.killermile.com. Organisers advise acting quickly, as there are only 1,250 spots available in total.
