A multi-million pound plan to revamp a popular park in Stafford has been revealed, with preliminary work set to get underway this month.

Long-term plans for the town’s Rowley Park Sports Stadium have been drawn up following extensive consultation with local residents, schools, and disability groups. The masterplan aims to modernize the site while ensuring facilities are inclusive for all users.

Phase One: Inclusive Play and Infrastructure

Around £1.2m has already been secured for the initial phase, funded by developer contributions (Section 106). This first stage of work includes:

  • Inclusive Play Area: A top priority identified by the community, particularly toddler facilities.
  • Learn to Ride Facility: A safe space for youngsters to practice cycling.
  • New Equipment: Outdoor gym equipment, seating, and improved pathways.
  • Landscaping: Significant woodland planting to enhance the park's natural beauty.

Preliminary work to enhance the main entrance, gates, and roadway is expected to begin in late February 2026.

Future Ambitions

As further funding becomes available, the council intends to roll out subsequent stages of the masterplan. Potential future features include:

  • A wheeled sports area and new tennis courts.
  • A community sports hub with changing rooms and public toilets.
  • A community garden, walking routes, and dedicated picnic areas.
  • Significant car park improvements.

The park's existing artificial football pitch is also slated for replacement during the summer "off-season," alongside upgrades to the floodlighting.

“The views of local people, families, youngsters and everyone who uses this popular area are very important in shaping our vision for the park. The council has a great track record of providing popular destination parks across the borough and I expect Rowley Park Sports Stadium to be no exception.”

Councillor Gillian Pardesi, Cabinet Member for Leisure

Rowley Park remains a vital hub for the community, currently hosting an athletics track, bowling green, and multiple sports courts used by thousands of residents and sportspeople annually.
