They say charity begins at home – and for one lucky Leek resident, that proved to be true when he won the jackpot in the Staffordshire Moorlands Community Lottery.
The winner, who wishes to be identified only as Kevin, won the top prize of £25,000 in a recent draw.
Describing it as a “shock at first” he said he chose to play the Community Lottery because: “The principle of supporting causes that are more locally based to the area I live is something I like the idea of. In this way, I know financial support is directed to my local community, whether that is charities or projects that I’m more likely to see some benefit from.
“The nice thing is we don’t need to think about spending the winnings as it’s a bonus to be enjoyed. Whilst the winnings might not be life changing, they are a great opportunity for a bit of luxury or a treat from time to time which will make it a rather a memorable and special year for us. Plus, we’ll no doubt also give a small amount to a local charity or the church.
“We’ve never won a thing, so it can happen, but you’ve got to be in it to win it. So I would encourage everyone to get yourself in, even if it’s only one number, and you too could be a winner. Plus, it’s reassuring to know your money is helping your community.”
Staffordshire Moorlands Community Lottery is an online weekly lottery drawn at 8pm every Saturday. Tickets cost £1 and all funds raised go to good causes that benefit the local community in the Moorlands.
Players can choose a specific good cause to support or they can support the Lottery Central Fund which is distributed to the community by a committee.
“It’s fantastic to see a local player winning the jackpot. Ticket buyers are helping to provide much-needed funds for a host of community organisations and groups who are doing such good work right across the Moorlands – something that we know they very much appreciate."
— Councillor Bill Cawley, Cabinet Member for Communities
“To have a local resident win the top prize just adds to the good news stories that our Community Lottery is delivering every week. I’m delighted for Kevin – I hope he enjoys his winnings and the positive feeling of giving back to your community that comes from playing the Moorlands lottery.”
