Leek’s indoor markets are going from strength to strength since re-launching following a major £3.4 million investment project.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council led the initiative to modernise the amenities while creating flexible spaces for both businesses and the local community. Since the re-opening in late 2024, the Butter and Trestle markets have enjoyed a new lease of life, attracting a footfall of approximately 385,000 in their first year.

A Vibrant New Era

The renovation has been met with overwhelming public approval, with nearly 80% of customers rating their experience as ‘very good’ or ‘good.’ Feedback from locals highlights a "vibrant" and "beautiful" new feel that maintains a strong community heart.

Key features of the transformation include:

  • Three New Food & Drink Units: Designed to complement the existing mix of traditional shops and stalls.
  • Flexible Event Spaces: The markets now host a diverse calendar of events, including evening markets, music performances, and film screenings.
  • Community Hub: The venue has become central to major town events like the Christmas lights switch-on, Pride weekend, and the Day of the Dead festival.
“Investing in upgrading Leek’s indoor markets has paid dividends – we’ve created modern, flexible spaces in the heart of the town that meet both business and community needs and respect the heritage of these Victorian buildings. They are thriving, vibrant spaces with something for everyone to enjoy all year round.”

Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism

Wider Regeneration

The market project, funded by the UK Government, is just one of three major regeneration schemes currently transforming Leek. Residents can look forward to further improvements later this year:

  • Brough Park Health & Wellbeing Centre: Work is well underway on this new facility.
  • Nicholson Institute: Contractors are now on-site for renovations.
  • Completion Dates: Both projects are expected to be finished by late summer 2026.
