Fletcher Moorland marks 80 years in business with Dougie Mac fundraising challenge
2026 sees Stoke based engineering specialists, Fletcher Moorland celebrate 80 years in business. It was in 1946 that electrical engineer, Sam Fletcher, founded a business to rewind and sell electric motors to the local pottery, mining and manufacturing industries in the area.
Fast forward 80 years and the company is today, one of the most respected engineering service providers in the country, having local, National and International reach for its services and products.
Still in family ownership, Malcolm Fletcher took over from his father and grew the business. Malcolm’s son, Matt Fletcher took the reins in 2008 and drives the business forward today.
Matt said, “We are first and foremost a family business, that doesn’t mean being run by a family, it’s the families working together in the business that make us the success we are today. I’d say that almost half the 120 people here are related to someone else in the business. That makes us rather special, we all support each other”.
Fletcher Moorland has some of the most highly skilled engineers in the country. Whether it’s refurbishing a servo drive for a food manufacturing company, rewinding a wind turbine generator, repairing a pump from a theme park. It’s a hive of activity in the Stoke based workshops. Matt Fletcher said “We continually develop our service offering here, recently we’ve set up a precision engineering division to manufacture component parts for our customers. It’s great to bring manufacturing back to Stoke”.
Matt reckons that his grandfather would still recognise the core of the business’ activity, however he feels that he’d be amazed at the scope of what Fletcher Moorland offers these days.
Celebrating 80 years is a major milestone for the company. When the staff were asked how they’d like to celebrate, an overwhelming suggestion was to tie it to a fundraising campaign for the company’s charity of choice, the Dougie Mac.
Operations Director, Di Bouchier said “We’ve always supported the Dougie Mac here. Everyone knows somebody who’s been cared for or who had been supported by their wonderful staff. My sister’s final days were in the great care of the Dougie Mac.”
Di said that Fletcher Moorland is a people-centric business, so it was right to get all the people involved in a fundraiser. A decision was made to join an 80-year celebration into an ‘Around the World in 80 days’ challenge.
Set-up in the company’s conference room is a pair of exercise bikes and a treadmill. All the company’s staff have been challenged to cycle or run the cumulative equivalent of the circumference of the Earth, a total of 24,901 miles, in 80 days.
“We are aiming to raise £80,000 for the Dougie Mac with this and other individual challenges by the time we celebrate our 80 years in business with a gala dinner at the Bet365 stadium on the 4th July.” — Di Bouchier, Operations Director
