A fundraising campaign is underway to support a powerful creative project in Stoke-on-Trent that is helping care-experienced young people feel seen, supported and inspired.
The Clay Together programme, delivered by British Ceramics Biennial, is aiming to raise £13,500 through the Big Give Arts for Impact campaign. The initiative offers regular creative sessions at the BCB Studio in Stoke, providing a safe and welcoming space for young people to explore clay, develop skills, and connect with others who share similar life experiences.
In Stoke-on-Trent, there were 1,156 children in care as of March 2024, the highest rate relative to population of any local authority in England. Many young people with experience of the care system face additional challenges, including social isolation and difficulties with mental health, particularly during their teenage years.
Clay Together has been designed to respond directly to these challenges. Through hands-on creative sessions, participants are encouraged to express themselves, build confidence and form meaningful connections in a supportive environment. The programme also gives young people a voice in shaping activities, helping them develop communication and leadership skills.
Early sessions have already shown a strong positive impact. Participants and carers have travelled from across the region, including as far as Birmingham, to take part.
“You can have freedom with creativity and whatever you do, there's no limits to what you can choose to do.”
— Young Participant
“One of the most important skills that the children have come away with is a huge increase in confidence and the ability to communicate what they're thinking and their ideas. This will have a huge impact as they go forward in life.”
— BCB Associate Artist
Donations to the campaign are being matched for a limited time, meaning every contribution can have double the impact.
Supporters are encouraged to donate before midday on 24 March to help the project reach its target and continue delivering these vital sessions for young people across Stoke-on-Trent.
